Why you need to attend Spring One as an ‘infra person’

For many of you reading this, you’re asking what SpringOne is and you’re perhaps wondering why you’d be interested in attending an event focussed on technologies like Spring, Reactive, Java, .NET and more. It’s a ‘DEV’ conference right and what’s that got to do with me ?????? The answer is EVERYTHING.

I worked in IT Operations for 13 years before joining VMware and often talked about my ‘Internal Customer‘, but the reality was I didn’t have one – I had an “Internal Hostage“, I mean where back in 2005 were they going to go if they didn’t get services from me ?

Today you have to treat your internal customers as REAL customers, and that means understanding them. Unless you start to understand your internal customer, you’ll become increasingly irrelevant to them and their needs – and where better to start to understand their world, than at SpringOne 2020.

1 – What is a Development Framework (like Spring) anyway and what does it do ?

To get your head around this space, check out Glenn Renfro and his session on ‘What is Spring’. He’ll take you through where the Spring Framework came from (and why) and will walk through what the varions layers are there for, and at each layer what projects comprise each layer. This is great friendly content and is the perfect place for you to start learning !

2 – Understanding how your internal customer (the Devs) build at speed

One of the big challenges that I often hear people talk about is understanding how ‘Apps’ get built and delivered, what does that path to production really look like and how does it impact an organisation. This session “How (not) to Develop a Modern Product Management Practice at Speed” is delivered by VMware customer Tesco Bank and will explain to you just how you can organise and scale out a team to deliver Digital capability at speed, focussing on how they created the Tesco digital gift card to help those self-isolating get shopping during the COVID lockdown in the UK with Jana Werner from Tesco Bank.

3 – Why Security + Compliance + Logging + Monitoring + Capacity Management = Customer Trust

All phrases you’d expect to hear in a conversation about your SLA’s and SLO’s for your infrastructure platform right – but how do they translate into the world of large-scale distribution systems running Modern Apps ? This session delivered by Brendan Aye from T-Mobile looks at the impact of failure and explores how to fail fast (and fail forward, learning, innovating as you go) and the lessons that they have learnt with respect ot the people, process and technology.

4 – Building a Business Case for App Modernization

So it turns out that our Dev friends have to deal with the challenges of laying out a business case for modernizing apps, just as IT would have to for an infrastructure transformation. In this session Dormain Drewitz who has worked for Pivotal and previously as a technology investment analyst will explore the blocks for building that case for modernizing apps either running on (or potentially leaving) your infrastructure !

5. – Finally, start with the Keynote !

As with any conference, start with the keynote where you’ll see Ajay Patel (SVP VMware Modern App Platforms) and Pat Gelsinger (CEO VMware) on stage with Jurgen Hoeller (co-founder of Spring) alongside the Spring community – as ever a great opportunity to get a feel for what’s coming up.
